Once upon a time, patients were in the center of medical care. Doctors came to you, hospitals made sure you were always attended to, employers provided robust benefits, and insurance companies were there to pay the bills.
Today, however, the patient has been swept out of the center of this circle of medical care. Tests that are acknowledged as unnecessary are routinely ordered, so that physicians can protect against allegations they didn’t consider all medical possibilities. Insurance companies dictate the length of hospital stays. Negotiated reimbursement rates for medical procedures have created a financial system that has doctors taking too many patients in order to support an office practice or opting to become a boutique practice not accepting insurance reimbursement at all. In a landscape of increasing costs, employers are facing a very real need to shift costs to employees through higher deductibles, co-payments and the share of the premium paid by the individual.
We think it’s time you return to the center of of the care cycle. From its center, circled around you are premier medical facilities and providers, meeting the same high standards you need and expect. Medical staffs surround you to make sure you are properly cared for, rather than having to run from bed to bed checking on you only when you ring the call button. Costs are affordable, so that you aren’t swept out on a specified day or forced to skip the care you really need.
Recent surveys confirm what we’ve known for some time. The best care isn’t always in our community, and we’re willing to travel to get it. We’ll drive or fly for hours to make sure our husbands, wives, sons and daughters receive the treatment they need. As a husband said yesterday, “I’m not willing to give up. I’ll do anything to get the care that will help my wife.” I suspect under similar circumstances each of us would choose similarly.
